Hanaya carries a founding story unlike any other Bangkok Japanese restaurant: a Kagoshima-born chef who arrived before World War II and built a restaurant that outlasted every contemporary. Third-generation chef Yoshio Watanuki recommends ordering sushi made from local Thai fish, delivered fresh each morning, alongside the daily set menu. Reservations are essential; walk-ins regularly miss out.

Hanaya 1976 occupies a standalone two-storey house at 683 Si Phraya Road (also accessed via Soi Charoen Krung 39) in Bang Rak, one of Bangkok's oldest commercial districts and home to some of the city's longest-running foreign businesses. The restaurant has its own car park.

Hanaya's history begins in September 1939, when the founding chef, a native of Kagoshima, Japan, crossed to Bangkok after a period in Manchuria, responding to a relative's invitation to establish a Japanese restaurant in the Si Phraya area. At the time, four or five Japanese restaurants operated in the same vicinity; Hanaya is the only one still open. The restaurant briefly suspended operations during World War II before reopening and has run continuously since. It is considered the oldest surviving Japanese restaurant in Thailand.

The restaurant is now managed by Yoshio Watanuki, the third-generation owner-chef (Thai name: Yoshio, family name Watanuki). His father, the second-generation chef Takashi, remains active. The interior features air-conditioned Japanese-style rooms with a mix of standard table seating, tatami floor seating, private rooms, and a sushi bar counter where guests can watch the chef work.

The menu is broad: sushi made from both locally sourced Thai fish and imported varieties, all delivered fresh each morning, alongside sashimi, udon, soba, fried and set-meal options, and Japanese curry with tonkatsu. Chef Yoshio recommends the Thai-fish sushi in particular, noting that local species compare favourably with imported alternatives found elsewhere in Bangkok. The daily set menu (hi-gawari teishoku) has historically been offered at accessible price points with miso soup, rice, pickles, and fresh fruit included.
