Isao
5 Sukhumvit 31, Khlong Toei Nuea, Watthana, Bangkok 10110
Order the Jackie first; it is the signature for a reason. Then add the sushi sandwich, because the format is unusual and the kitchen executes it confidently. Book the dinner slot rather than walking in, especially Thursday through Saturday. Worth the soi walk from Phrom Phong rather than a cab fight on Sukhumvit.
Walk about 150 meters down Sukhumvit Soi 31, off Phrom Phong BTS, and Isao sits on the left. The room is small. The crowd is young, stylish, and loud enough to feel alive without losing the table conversation. This is the casual end of Bangkok's Japanese scene rather than the formal sushi-bar version.
The menu runs on rolls. The Jackie is the signature: a caterpillar-shaped roll built with tempura, flying fish roe, avocado, rice, seaweed, and shrimp on top, plated to look the part. The sushi sandwich is the second order to know about, shaped like a grilled cheese and packed with raw spicy tuna and salmon mixed with tempura crunchies and flying fish roe.
Pricing sits in the mid range. Simple rolls land around 200 THB and the more complex ones run 300 to 400 THB, with a typical bill around 500 to 1000 THB per person depending on how deep you go into the fusion section. Honest pricing for the quality on the plate.
Isao's reputation in Bangkok is built on consistency rather than novelty. The same rolls come out the same way, week after week, which is what keeps the room full and the dinner reservations tight.
Open daily 11:00 to 14:30 for lunch and 17:30 to 22:00 for dinner. Book ahead for dinner, especially toward the weekend. From Phrom Phong BTS the walk takes about five minutes once you turn into Soi 31.
