The university opened May 18, 1959, as North Bangkok Technical School, a joint project between the Royal Thai Government and West Germany that marked Thailand's first major German educational partnership and technical collaboration at the vocational and engineering training level. The German influence persists today through the Thai-German Graduate School of Engineering and the Thai-French Innovation Institute, both anchored to industry collaboration rather than purely academic research pathways. You walk onto the Bangkok campus at 1518 Pracharat 1 Road and the institutional scale becomes immediately visible: 14.08 hectares, 43 buildings, 27,846 students. Most enroll across engineering, applied science, information technology, architecture, and several other Bangkok-based faculties, plus the central library and multiple research institutes supporting technical development across automation, materials science, and energy systems.

The structure breaks into thirteen faculties, two colleges, and two graduate schools. Programs run from vocational certificates through to doctoral degrees. The 2022 enrollment breakdown shows the distribution: 21,611 undergraduates, 3,164 master's candidates, 763 doctoral students, and 1,592 vocational learners. Engineering and applied science dominate, but the Bangkok campus also houses applied arts and architecture faculties, which broadens the student demographic beyond purely technical disciplines.

The Prachinburi campus opened in 1995 on 197.41 hectares. Handles agro-industry and industrial management. The Rayong site feeds the Eastern Economic Corridor with automation and electric vehicle programs.
