Tang Toh Kang earns its reputation not through marketing but through sheer institutional weight. The sixth-floor museum is genuinely worth the climb, and the free admission makes it one of the better-value heritage stops in Chinatown. Skip it only if gold and craft history leave you completely cold.

You step off Yaowarat Road and into a seven-storey building that a Dutch architect designed for a gold trader who gave the shop his own name. The ground floor operates exactly as it did during King Chulalongkorn's era: transaction counters, display cases, staff who know what they are doing. Take the stairs to six.\n\nThe sixth floor is a working museum where the tools never left. Wooden weighing scales sit beside the digital versions that replaced them. Acid-solution jars from Ratchaburi Province, used in gold testing, line a shelf. Cast molds in lead and metal carry the impressions of dragons, crowns, hearts, stars, castles, horses, goats, and rabbits, each shape representing a piece of jewellery that someone in Chinatown once ordered. An original Garuda emblem from the shop's early operations anchors the far wall. An abacus, a typewriter, stacked receipts, and photographs of the building across its different decades fill in the rest. The city named the building a Bangkok heritage site in 2004. Entry to the museum costs nothing.\n\nThe shop never expanded to branches. It has operated from a single address at 345 Yaowarat Road since it opened more than 140 years ago.\n\nAmong the 132 gold shops in Yaowarat, Tang Toh Kang occupies a specific position: other shops bought from it to resell. That distribution role, sustained for generations from one building on one street, is the plain fact behind the name on the sign. The practical caveat is the hours. Monday through Saturday, 9:30 AM to 4 PM. Closed Sundays and public holidays. Arrive after 3 PM and the upper floors may already be winding down.
