Bangkok has dozens of flyover-shade parks now, but this one set the template in 2015. The participatory design process means the layout actually fits how the surrounding Muslim community uses the space, not some consultant's generic blueprint. If you want to see what happens when infrastructure planning includes the people who live underneath it, start here.

You step off Rama VI Road and the expressway overhead becomes the roof. The Expressway Authority of Thailand delivered this project in 2015, converting what had been a deteriorated no-man's-land beneath the Sri Rat Expressway into a multi-use sports and recreation ground for the five surrounding communities. The Health Promotion Foundation funded it. Arsom Silp Institute ran the participatory design workshops.

The layout includes badminton and multi-purpose sport courts, a children's playground, a dedicated senior citizens' area, and enough green space for group exercise classes and informal community gatherings. Wheelchair-accessible entry and car park sit on the Rama VI side. The design incorporated input from the local Muslim community, so cultural identity runs through the space in ways a top-down plan would miss.

The expressway columns break the ground into zones rather than one open field. Some people see that as a constraint. The designers leaned into it, creating pockets that work for different activities and age groups at the same time without everyone spilling into each other. The overhead structure also means the courts stay dry during sudden downpours and shaded during midday heat, which stretches the usable hours past what most open-air public courts can offer.

The facility reached its tenth year of operation in 2025. It runs as a genuine community asset, not a showpiece that gets locked after the ribbon-cutting. The space is free and open to Bangkok residents.

Bring your own equipment. The courts and green areas are the infrastructure; rackets, balls, and mats are on you. Peak weekend mornings see the heaviest use, so aim for late afternoon or weekday slots if you want a court without waiting.
