Artifacts trace Portuguese settlement from the Ayutthaya Kingdom forward, and the personal-home setting sharpens the experience: you walk through a real family residence built over 80 years ago, now serving as both document and exhibit of the community it represents.
You step into a residence first, museum second. The building went up more than 80 years ago during King Rama VII's reign, constructed by a Chinese carpenter named Phuk for a Catholic family in the Kudi Chin neighborhood of Thonburi. That family's descendants converted it in 2017 into a cultural institution rather than sell to outsiders, and the layout still reads as domestic: rooms arranged for living, not exhibition. Nawinee Phongthai, herself a member of the Thoratranont family descended from Portuguese soldiers who settled here generations back, founded the museum to document 250 years of Portuguese-Thai coexistence in this sliver of old Bangkok. The upper floor holds the core collection: household tools used by early Kudi Chin residents, period photographs, and artifacts tracing the community's continuous presence from the Ayutthaya Kingdom through contemporary Thailand.
The exhibits favor directness. Objects and photos arranged in cabinets and on walls the way a family would display them. The lighting stays ambient. The atmosphere leans quiet and domestic, closer to a personal archive than an institutional collection.
The ground floor operates as a café. Drinks and snacks served in a shaded courtyard. Admission is free. Private donations keep the museum running.
The museum closes on Mondays and operates 10 AM to 5:30 PM the rest of the week. The experience gains depth when paired with the surrounding Kudichin neighborhood: the Portuguese-Thai heritage documented upstairs is still actively lived in the streets outside. The museum preserves a community that hasn't archived itself.
