Brown Sugar is Bangkok's most durable jazz institution, operating continuously since 1985 and moving from its original Sarasin Road home to the current Soi Nana address without losing its identity. The multi-level space has an upper floor built for big band sets and a ground floor for acoustic sessions. Portraits of international jazz legends line the walls. Come for the music first: the food and drinks follow naturally from the atmosphere.

Brown Sugar at 18 Soi Nana, Pom Prap Sattru Phai, is one of Bangkok's most storied live music venues, operating continuously since 1985. The bar was originally located on Sarasin Road near Lumphini Park before relocating to its current address in the Chinatown-adjacent Soi Nana area. In 1997, Newsweek recognised Brown Sugar as one of the best bars in the world.

The venue runs on live music. Bands perform nightly except Mondays, covering jazz, soul, blues, funk, and pop-jazz, with sets typically running from 8pm through to 1am on weeknights and later at weekends. The upper floor hosts big band performances while the ground floor carries acoustic and smaller ensemble sessions. Portraits of international jazz legends are displayed across the walls, anchoring the venue's musical identity visually as well as sonically. There is no cover charge: guests order from the bar and settle in.

The menu covers a broad range: Italian, American, Mexican, Thai, and fusion dishes sit alongside an extensive drinks list. Beers start at 180 baht and cocktails from 200 baht. Happy hour on food and beer runs from 5pm to 8pm on evenings the venue is open. A monthly Brown Sugar Showcase features international and touring acts on the last Friday and Saturday of each month.

Brown Sugar is accessible from the nearest MRT at Hualamphong, roughly a 15-minute walk from exit 1. The venue opens at 5pm Tuesday through Sunday, with Friday and Saturday running until 2am. It is closed on Mondays.

Built for listeners who put musicianship ahead of social media backdrops, Brown Sugar comes alive on weeknights when the regulars arrive and the bands hit their stride. Arrive by 10pm for full band performances at their best.
