The Yaowarat address is the right one to visit if you care about context. Most ChaTraMue branches are mall kiosks. This one sits in the neighborhood where the whole concept of Thai milk tea was invented, and the shop itself is small enough that the counter feels immediate. Classic Thai milk tea here is the product that defined a category. Come before 9PM or you will miss it.

In 1920, a family of eight siblings migrated from Chaozhou, China, to Bangkok, and Sa Pae, the third brother, opened a modest tea shop on Yaowarat Road. World War II bombing destroyed it. The family relocated within the same street, adapted the menu because tropical heat made hot oolong impractical, and in 1945 formally registered the ChaTraMue brand with a product that would become globally recognizable: iced black tea sweetened with condensed milk and evaporated milk, poured amber-orange over crushed ice.\n\nStanding at the counter here, that amber-orange color is the first thing you process. The tea brews dark, almost opaque, before condensed milk is added, which pulls the hue toward something between turmeric and rust. The sweetness is significant but not cloying. Ice is crushed, not cubed, and drinks come in a plastic cup ready for immediate consumption. The shop itself is compact, the kind of place where merchandise shares counter space with the brewing equipment, and seating is limited enough that most customers take their drinks onto Yaowarat.\n\nThe business behind that counter now runs 240 ChaTraMue branches across 20 Thai provinces and operates 136 franchise locations internationally. Cha Thai International Co. holds 70% of the Thai tea market. Northern Thai tea leaves have been sourced from the company's own processing facility in Wiang Pa Pao District, Chiang Rai since 1989.\n\nHours run 8AM to 9PM daily. That cuts off earlier than the surrounding Chinatown night market energy, which is worth knowing if you plan to arrive after the gold-shop strip closes down for the evening. Come during daylight or early evening.
