JHOL earns its Michelin Guide listing through disciplined regionalism. The kitchen commits to coastal Indian traditions that the vast majority of Thai-based Indian restaurants ignore, and the cocktail program is built to pair with the food rather than sit beside it. Seven cookbooks worth of technical precision shows in every plate. Book ahead: the room is not large.

The name is Mumbai street slang for mischief. That framing is deliberate. Chef Hari Nayak did not come to Sukhumvit Soi 18 to open a crowd-pleasing Indian restaurant. He came to serve the regional food etched in his memory from growing up in Udupi, a coastal town in southern India, filtered through serious professional training and years cooking at the highest level in New York.\n\nNayak graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park and spent formative years in the kitchen at Daniel, the French fine-dining institution run by Daniel Boulud in New York City. He has since authored seven cookbooks, with "Modern Indian Cooking" among the best known. That rigor shows at JHOL: the food is precise and considered, not a comfort-food approximation of something familiar.\n\nThe menu moves through four Indian coastal traditions. West coast: Konkan and Malabar. East coast: Chettinad, Pondicherry, and Bay of Bengal. All dishes are designed for sharing and incorporate seasonal Thai produce alongside regional Indian technique. The Roasted Pumpkin Menasakai arrives as a Konkan-style red chili curry with ghee rice alongside. The Pani Puri uses avocado mousse and jicama with a passion fruit sauce. Cocktails are purpose-built to work with the food: Raabta pairs gin with kaffir lime; The Shaman uses Issan rum, coconut, and orange marmalade. These are not afterthoughts.\n\nThe restaurant holds a place in the Michelin Guide Bangkok. Lunch runs daily from 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM and dinner from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Outdoor seating is available. The room is an eight-minute walk from BTS Asok station.\n\nOne practical note: reservations via the restaurant's website are strongly advisable for dinner. The room is intentionally small, which is part of what makes the experience work, but it means walk-ins carry real risk of no table.
