MTCH - Ari
65 Soi Phahon Yothin 5, Phaya Thai, Bangkok 10400
MTCH is the most rigorous matcha operation in Bangkok. Each cultivar is matched to a preparation method, not simply blended for visual appeal. The daytime-only hours (9AM to 5:30PM daily) are the single honest constraint, but for anyone serious about Japanese tea, this is a non-negotiable stop in Ari.
On a quiet stretch of Soi Phahon Yothin 5, about a five-minute walk from BTS Ari, MTCH occupies a two-story shophouse stripped of decoration. White walls, stainless surfaces, and natural light. Nothing competes with the drinks.\n\nThe bar holds nine single-cultivar matcha powders from Japan's leading growing regions: Uji, Yabe, and Fukuoka. Founders Jew and Ja-Ae have travelled to meet producers in each province, a practice that directly shapes which varieties make the menu and how they are prepared. MTCH brews matcha as milk tea rather than in the traditional Japanese ceremony format, an approach that has surprised the producers they visit, given how far it departs from convention.\n\nEach cultivar is assigned a preparation suited to its character. Tsuyu Hikari and Uji Samidori are developed with hot water; Okumidori and Haru show better over cold milk. A double-whisk technique, first in hot water then over cold milk, produces a stable foam that softens intensity without masking origin. The Sparkling Ujihikari (฿120) pairs creamy Uji powder with soda and finishes with lemon and thyme. The Arashi iced matcha latte is the house signature and skews strong. Desserts include a Matcha Banoffee and a Matcha or Hojicha Panna Cotta, priced around ฿135. The retail shelf carries matcha tea bags and preparation tools.\n\nMTCH has been named Thailand's Best Specialty Matcha Shop for both 2024 and 2025. The Ari location is one of three Bangkok branches, alongside Ratchapruk and Sukhumvit.\n\nHours run 9AM to 5:30PM every day. This is a morning-to-afternoon venue, which suits the Ari crowd of remote workers and regulars who build their day around a first-floor window seat and a slow, well-made cup.
