Suan Luang Rama IX
Chaloem Phrakiat Ratchakan Thi 9 Rd, เเขวงหนองบอน Prawet, Bangkok 10250
Suan Luang Rama IX rewards early risers and plant enthusiasts equally. The Botanical Garden holds over 3,300 plant species catalogued under taxonomic and ecological principles, with indoor and desert exhibition buildings alongside a full herbarium and research library. Admission costs 10 baht, making it one of the most accessible green spaces in the city.
Inaugurated on 1 December 1987 to mark King Bhumibol Adulyadej's sixtieth birthday, Suan Luang Rama IX covers 500 rai (roughly 200 acres) in Bangkok's Prawet district, making it the largest public park in the city. The park is organised into six named sections: the Birthday Hall, the Botanical Garden, the Paradise Garden, the Crystal Water Garden, the Water Garden, and the Sports Field, each with a distinct character and set of facilities.
The Botanical Garden is the intellectual core of the grounds. It maintains more than 3,300 plant species arranged according to taxonomic and ecological principles and includes dedicated indoor and desert plant exhibition buildings, a herb garden, a library, a herbarium, and scientific laboratories. A pavilion sits at the centre of the water feature, reachable via the surrounding promenades.
The international garden sections present curated plantings from multiple continents, with Chinese and Japanese gardens representing East Asian horticultural traditions alongside Spanish, English, French, and Italian gardens. The lake at the heart of the park is large enough for paddle-boat rentals and lakeside walking circuits that fill up throughout the day.
Active visitors are well catered for: jogging and cycling paths run throughout the grounds, outdoor fitness stations serve both adults and children, and sports courts support badminton and tennis. Aerobics classes, swordplay, Tai Chi, and yoga sessions all take place within the park on a regular basis.
The park opens daily at 5:00 AM and closes at 7:00 PM. The entrance fee is 10 baht for adults and 5 baht for children. The nearest public transport connection is Suan Luang Rama IX MRT station. An annual floral fair called Phanmai Ngam Aram Suan Luang Ror Kao has been held every December since 1987, drawing visitors from across Bangkok for seasonal plant exhibitions.
