You settle into a building that has served a Thai lord, a foreign embassy, and now a W Bangkok dining complex all within the span of 135 years. Paii leads with modern Thai seafood and a Heritage Afternoon Tea at THB 1,890 for two. Bar Sathorn builds its 20-cocktail list around four chapters of the mansion's own timeline. Worth the trip for both the food and the architecture.

You arrive at 106 North Sathorn Road and the building comes into focus before you push through the gate. The two-storey neoclassical facade with its three-storey corner tower and hipped roof finished in diamond-shaped cement tiles belongs to a structure with more than a century of layered history behind it.

The mansion was built in 1889 for Luang Sathonrachayut, the wealthy Chinese businessman who engineered the digging of Sathorn Canal during the reign of King Rama V and whose canal transformed transportation in the city. The building passed through several owners and became the luxury Hotel Royal in the early twentieth century. From 1948 to 1999 it served as the first Soviet Embassy, and later the Russian Embassy, in Thailand. W Bangkok took on the property and reopened it in July 2015 after a restoration carried out in consultation with the Department of Fine Arts, which subsequently registered the mansion as a national archaeological site. The compound earned the ASA Architectural Conservation Award in the merit category for architecture and community heritage conservation in 2020 to 2021.

Today the grounds hold four buildings arranged around a landscaped outdoor courtyard. Paii, the signature restaurant, presents modern Thai seafood built around sustainable, locally sourced ingredients. The menu runs from a la carte options to a signature three-course Paii Experience, and the Heritage Afternoon Tea is served daily from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM at THB 1,890++ for two, pairing sweet and savory bites with TWG tea. Paii is open daily from 12 PM to 11 PM.

Bar Sathorn occupies the drinks chapter. Bar Manager Francesco Moretti developed a menu of 20 signature cocktails and mocktails organized across four periods drawn directly from the mansion's timeline, pairing Thai ingredients and flavours with international spirits. Order one of the history-chapter cocktails and the illustrated menu itself explains the context behind each pour.

The full address is 106-108 North Sathorn Road, Si Lom, Bang Rak, and the complex sits within the Silom-Sathorn corridor of Bangkok.
