Order the kaya custard toast. It is 28 baht, the menu has not changed in four generations of family ownership, and the kopi tiam format that the founder imported in 1933 still has no real twin in Bangkok. The two-eggs plate with four toppings at 100 baht is the full breakfast move. Come early because the kitchen closes at 2:30.

Walk up to 72 Charoen Krung Road and you face a humble two-story shophouse with vintage cabinets behind the counter and old tin cans of Milo lined along the shelf. The room has done this same breakfast since 1933.

The founder, an overseas Chinese investor, opened On Lok Yun as a kopi tiam, a Singapore-style coffee shop format that had not existed in Thailand. The name is Cantonese for amusement park. The shop has stayed in the same family across four generations, and the current owner Sombat Thayanukul keeps the menu exactly as his father served it.

The order is small and specific. Butter and sugar toast runs 23 baht, kaya custard toast 28, French toast 35, and the two-eggs-plus-four-toppings breakfast plate lands at 100 baht. The toppings rotate across bacon, ham, sausage, and Chinese sausage, with eggs scrambled or over-easy. There is filtered coffee and tea in the kopi tiam style. No menu has been added in decades and none has been taken away.

Hours run 6 AM to 2:30 PM daily, with the shop closed only for Chinese New Year and Songkran. The kitchen is built for the breakfast and brunch window. Come by 11 if you want a seat without waiting on the weekend.

The location is the back-story. Wang Burapha was Bangkok's entertainment district through the 1950s and 1960s, full of cinema crowds and shopping plazas, and On Lok Yun was where young hopefuls came to be scouted by film studios next door at the Chalermkrung Theater. The theater is still standing. The shophouse and the toast are still here too.
