Gyms in Bangkok

Our directory holds 143 conventional gyms and fitness centres in Bangkok: places you join to lift, run and use machines, as distinct from the muay thai gyms, yoga rooms, pilates studios and climbing walls that fill out the rest of the fitness category and have their own pages here.

The market splits in two. 47 of the 143 listings are branches of a chain with more than one Bangkok location, and the two biggest chains account for 27 of those on their own. The remaining 96 are single-site gyms, which is where both the best and the worst of this list sit.

Where they cluster

Watthana has 23, Pathum Wan 19 and Khlong Toei 17. Those three districts run along the Sukhumvit and Siam corridor and hold 41 percent of the page. Ratchathewi adds 11 and Bang Rak 9.

After that it thins out quickly. Phaya Thai, Din Daeng and Sathon have 6 each, Huai Khwang 5 and Phra Nakhon 4, then a long tail of districts with one, two or three: Bangkok Noi, Bang Phlat, Yan Nawa, Chatuchak, Khlong San, Suan Luang, Bang Khen, Bang Na, Bang Sue and a dozen more. If you live outside the centre, the practical choice is often between one nearby independent and a commute - which is exactly why this list is sorted by district as well as by popularity.

What the ratings say

142 of the 143 carry a public rating. The median is 4.6, and 79 sit at 4.5 or above - but 24 sit below 4.0, which is a wider spread than most pages on this site and makes the rating worth reading here.

Review volume is the weaker signal. The median gym has 79 reviews and the busiest has 595, so nothing on this page is reviewed at the volume a restaurant or a mall is. 14 listings have fewer than 10 reviews. Treat those as unmeasured rather than as either a find or a warning.

What is on a listing

Each entry carries district, location, opening hours where we have them, and contact details. 132 of the 143 have hours on file, 127 a phone number and 118 a website.

Hours are the field worth checking before you commit to anything. Several chains on this list run 24 hours and several independents keep short weekday-only schedules, and the difference decides whether a gym fits your day at all. What we do not hold is the rest of what makes a gym usable: equipment inventory, floor space, whether there is a squat rack or a pool, class timetables, contract length or price. None of that is in our data and we do not invent it.

One quirk worth knowing: the underlying category labels are inconsistent. 72 listings are tagged as a fitness centre, 39 as a gym, 14 with the British spelling, 12 as a fitness room and 6 as a personal trainer. Those labels describe the same kind of venue and carry no information about size or quality.

How to pick one

  • Start from the commute, not the list order. A gym you pass on the way home gets used. One that needs a BTS change does not.
  • Go and look before you sign. Photos and ratings say nothing about whether the free-weight area is three squat racks or one bench everyone queues for.
  • Ask about contract length and the cancellation terms. Long lock-ins are normal at the chain end of this market and are the single most common complaint about it.
  • Read the low ratings, not the high ones. With 24 gyms here below 4.0, the ratings on this page actually separate venues, which is not true of every category.
  • Check the hours against your own schedule. A 24-hour chain and a gym that closes at 8pm are not competing for the same person.

Ratings and review counts on each listing come from public listing data and reflect what visitors reported. We do not verify or adjust them.

Frequently asked questions

How many gyms are there in Bangkok?

Our directory holds 143 conventional gyms and fitness centres in Bangkok. That count excludes muay thai and boxing gyms, yoga and pilates studios, climbing walls and martial arts academies, all of which have their own pages. Counting those in takes the number close to 200.

Which district has the most gyms?

Watthana leads with 23 of the 143, followed by Pathum Wan with 19 and Khlong Toei with 17. Those three cover the Sukhumvit and Siam corridor and hold 41 percent of the page between them. Ratchathewi has 11 and Bang Rak 9. Beyond that the count drops fast: most outer districts have one or two, and several have none at all.

Are these chain gyms or independents?

Both, and the split matters. 47 of the 143 listings are branches of a chain that runs more than one location here, and the two largest chains alone account for 27. The other 96 are single-site gyms. A chain branch is the safer bet on equipment and opening hours; an independent is where the coaching and the room itself vary most, in either direction.

Why are muay thai gyms not on this page?

Because they are a different purchase. A muay thai gym sells training, usually in classes with a trainer, and our muay thai page covers those separately. This page is for gyms you join to use weights and machines on your own schedule. A few venues appear on both, but the exclusion is deliberate rather than an oversight.

How much does a gym membership in Bangkok cost?

We do not hold membership prices, so we will not guess at them. Prices vary by an order of magnitude across this list, from a few hundred baht a month at a basic local weight room to premium chains and hotel clubs charging over 3,000. Every listing carries a phone number or website in most cases, and asking is the only reliable way to get a current number.
