Rooftop bars are one of the few things Bangkok genuinely does better than anywhere else, mostly because the city built upward without much regard for view corridors, so almost every tall building sells the skyline. Our directory holds 141 rooftop venues, ranked by review count. They range from hotel sky bars 70 floors up to shophouse terraces three floors above Charoen Krung.

Where they are

Phra Nakhon in the old town has the largest count in our data, and those are the low ones that trade height for a view of Wat Arun and the river. Bang Rak covers the Silom and Charoen Krung towers. Watthana adds the Sukhumvit rooftops through Asok, Phrom Phong, and Thong Lo, and Pathum Wan, Sathon, Khlong Toei, and Khlong San carry the rest, including most of the riverside terraces.

Choosing one

  • Height versus framing. The tallest bars give you the city as a grid of lights. The low riverside and old-town rooftops give you a subject to look at. Different evenings.
  • Minimum spend. Common at the well-known hotel rooftops, especially for a table with a view. Ask when you book.
  • Reservation. Walk-ins work on weeknights at most places. Friday and Saturday at the famous ones, book.
  • Weather. Check the forecast. An open deck in a May thunderstorm is a bar with a wet floor and an indoor overflow room.

Where are Bangkok's rooftop bars concentrated?

Phra Nakhon in the old town leads in our directory, largely thanks to the low-rise rooftops looking across to Wat Arun and the river. Bang Rak along Silom and Charoen Krung is next, then Watthana along Sukhumvit, Pathum Wan, Sathon, and Khlong Toei. Riverside venues sit mostly in Bang Rak and Khlong San.

Is there a dress code?

At the larger hotel rooftops, usually yes - smart casual at minimum, and several refuse shorts, sandals, or sleeveless shirts on men. Smaller independent rooftops are relaxed about it. Policies are set by each venue and change, so check the venue page or call ahead.

When is the best time to go?

Sunset is the obvious answer and also the most crowded. Arriving 45 to 60 minutes before sunset usually gets you a rail seat. The dry season from November to February has the most reliable evenings. In the hot season the view is often hazy until after dark.

Do rooftop bars close when it rains?

Many close the open deck during storms and move guests inside, and some shut entirely. Bangkok's rainy season runs roughly May to October with short heavy evening storms. Have a backup plan and check the forecast on the day.
